Viewing more multiple automation envelopes simultaneously in Session View?

this is more an Ableton question, but I’m wanting to match some (not all!) automation envelope actions within one looped file for creating simultaneous image and sound events. I am working in Session View.

What I want is to be able to see more than one automation envelope at the same time, so I can match some of the automations between different devices, to create an audio visual sync. Is there a way to do this? The manual is quite confusing, as it flips between Session and Arrangement views when discussing automation.

I do not want to copy and repeat the entire envelope. I just want to get the timings right between some moments of automation. Like comparing timelines. It seems surprisingly difficult to do.

At the moment I am remembering the track length data and flipping between different automation envelopes, which seems like a very clumsy and inefficient method.

thanks for any advice

I would recommend doing all your automation in Arrangement View first, and once you’re done, move the clip over to Session View, or in some cases use the right-click option “Consolidate Time to New Scene”.
Similarly, you can drag a clip from Session View to Arrangement View, make your edits, and then drag it back to Session View. Make sure to disable the “Lock Envelopes” toggle before doing this though.

So basically Arrangement View is the place where you can do extensive editing on multiple lanes, while in Session View you can only edit one lane at a time for small tweaks.

thanks, Jean-Paul. As I feared… I always develop a workflow that is not what Ableton intended, and I have to re-learn :-/

But now I know what i must do. One last question (sorry to be dumb) could you tell me where the “Lock Envelopes” tab is? Presumably in Arrangement…?
