Video Simpler - basic question

I’m brand new to Video Sync, but I’m experienced with Ableton.

For our band’s live show, I’m running Ableton Live 12 along with Ableset 2.75 (as our setlist manager).

Up to this point, I’ve been using Ableton’s built-in video player by outputting it to a second screen, and that’s been working well. However, we’re now transitioning to a multi-file workflow in Ableset—where each song is its own Ableton session instead of one large master set.

This gives us a lot more flexibility (essentially unlimited songs ready to go), but it introduces a problem: every time Ableset loads a new song, Ableton’s native video window closes and reopens. That’s what led me to start using Video Sync.

Currently, Video Sync works great when I run it on a separate screen. The issue is that Ableton still automatically opens its native video window whenever a video clip exists in the session.

From what I understand, the workaround is to host videos externally and trigger them via MIDI from Ableton. That way, removing video clips from Ableton should prevent the native video window from opening.

I’ve attempted to set this up using Video Sync’s Video Simpler:

  • Loaded Video Simpler onto a MIDI track in Arrangement View

  • Dragged a video into Video Sync

  • Created a MIDI clip and assigned it to trigger (C3)

  • Extended the MIDI clip across the length of the song

However, playback stops partway through, even after adjusting clip settings.

At this point, my setup feels a bit hacky, and I suspect I’m missing a simpler or more correct workflow. Most tutorials seem to skip over this part, assuming it’s straightforward—but I haven’t been able to get it fully working.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Mike, welcome to the forum!

…every time Ableset loads a new song, Ableton’s native video window closes and reopens.

I just tried to reproduce this, and I’m only able to do so after saving the Live Set with the native video window open already. So if you’d close it and resave the Live Set, next time it should reopen without the native video window appearing.

I’d strongly advise against doing this, as this is not what Video Simpler was designed to do. The main reason for this is the fact that video files in Video Simpler are loaded into RAM, which especially with (multiple) long duration/high resolution can quickly become a performance bottleneck. More context in the Device Reference chapter here, and this Troubleshooting article.

Video clips on Audio Tracks are not loaded into RAM, so I would just go with that

Thank you for the reply. I can’t believe I didn’t realize that if the native video window is saved closed, it will not open. I also ditched the Video Simpler idea and it seems to be working great. Thanks again!
