Hi!
I’m no light designer, I make music. I’m evaluating Beam 2 for purchase but I’m having a hard time making it work as i want. I just need the “Generic” m4l plug in to send values as this:
one knob → one channel
but when I turn up a knob i see on the visualizer that it does a not requested “mix” based on the color selected in the plug in. i don’t this. i just want 1 knob / 1 channel (i.e. generic plug in with 6 knobs that controls a fixture with 6 channels (from 140 to 145, just to say). is it possible?
This should be possible, but you probably need to workaround how Beam handles fixtures and color.
What I suggest is the following:
Create 6 ‘Generic Dimmer’ fixtures on channel 140 till 145, and assign them the same tag. (See screenshot, here the fixtures have the ‘My Fixture’ tag)
Grab the Generic Instrument and select the ‘My Fixture’ tag in the dropdown. Click the ‘+’ button so that you end up with 6 param dials.
Assign the ‘dim’ modulation to every param dial in the dropdown underneath the parameter. (See second screenshot)
Now, each knob controls each ‘Generic Dimmer’ fixture individually, giving you individual control over channel 140 to 145.
Here’s some information in our manual about how to control individual fixtures within the same tag with the Generic Instrument: Instruments | Showsync Support
THANKS. It works like a charm. Now i need to test it with many channels and if it go on working i’ll sure buy it. The main thing i need is stability. With other apps (and using midi from Ableton to the other app) the system was randomly lagging and cumulating delay.
I hope this is the solution.
I’ll let you know.

Thank you. For me is not easy to read manuals about lighting, because as a musician and sound designer i find the lexicon of lights super strange (what you call universe for me is channel and what you call channel for me is control change, and many other way to say things… and wtf is a fixture? lol, i know it’s my bad, but i would need a course just to take confidence with the language)
I understand the lighting/DMX terminology can be a bit confusing at first. Here is an article that explains some of these concepts, maybe this clears things up a bit: Introduction to lighting control | Showsync Support
