Choppy "stepped" dimming behavior in fixtures

Hi, I’m pretty new to lighting control, Beam is my first forray into dmx control. I’m not familiar with other lighting software and chose Beam because its inexpensive and I’m already quite familar with Max.

I have several slim pars, 2 cheap ones from Amazon and 2 Chauevt DJs, the T12BT and the T12BT ILS. I’m using Enttec DMX Pro to send data to the lights.

When using the dim parameter to control these fixtures there is noticeable “stepping” between values, its not a smooth dimming, which happens even when sending cycle~ into beam.catch~.

When I first tested Beam with one of the Amazon pars the output looked smooth, but after introducing the other par and complicating my patch a little (controlling dim with MSP envelopes) they then became choppy.

Even stranger, one of the Chauvet pars output is choppy, but the other one is smooth! Both are being controlled with a cycle~ into beam.catch~.

Unsure what point in the chain I should investigate. Could it be the refresh rate of the DMX pro? But then why would dimming be smooth for some fixtures at some times and not others?

Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

Hi, thanks for getting in touch! Could you please share your Max patch, Beam fixture patch file, any custom fixture profiles you might be using, as well as a short video that demonstrates the issue?
