Art-Net 4 support

In your troubleshooting section you often use terms like “standart art-net” - what revision are you reffering at?

Art-Net ver. 4 is from 2016, so almost 10 years old, so none of this is is true anymore:

Node with more than 4 ports: only first 4 ports are working

Some nodes have more than 4 output ports. Standard Art-Net can only carry 4 universes per IP address. That is why 8-port nodes typically receive on two IP addresses.

Node with more than 4 ports doesn’t have two IP addresses

In some cases, a node can also be used as a DMX extender, intending to use two of them, one for input, one for output. To facilitate that, they develop their own extended Art-Net-like protocol that supports more than 4 universes per IP address. This will unfortunately not be helpful when converting standard Art-Net to DMX, so when using this node in its standard mode, as an Art-Net to DMX converter, only the first 4 ports can be used.

Here is the latest specification for art-net 4. According to the document the implementation is not complicated and is 100% backwards compatible. So is there an possible update in the future for Beam? I would really like to use the software but thanks to the “only 4 universes per one IP addres” limitation I can’t use my whole rig.

Hi @cubedj21,

Beam can output any number of Art-Net universes up to 32768, the only limitation is what your network can handle. You can confirm and test this yourself with the demo version.

The support website’s troubleshooting section and the articles about Art-Net are several years old and due for an update, thanks for bringing attention to this. The two issues you quoted above would nowadays probably only apply to some older hardware.

I already bought the software and last time I’ve tried I had problem with outputing more than four universes to my Chauvet Net-X II splitter/server with one IP address. I’ll try again tomorrow - maybe I was doing something wrong - anyway thanks for quick answer

Curious to know if you were able to make this work. If not, please send an e-mail to support@showsync.com.

Yes, in the end I was able to access all 8 universes through only one IP address, so thanks!

I have another question - is there a possibility that more “colorspaceType” properties for SBFv3 schema will be added? I have quite a lot of fixtures that are using RGBA, RGBAW or RGBAL (A is for amber, L is lime) additive colormixing and support for that would be cool…

That’s good to hear, thanks for checking & confirming!

I replied in the other thread: More "colorspaceType" properties in SBFv3 schema - #2 by Luka
