The Shader Loader effect is an older version of our current system to build custom effects: The Plugin SDK. You can find all about it in the manual, and Cycling '74 published an article about it here.

It does require building your own Max for Live interface, but we have made that as straightforward as possible and we try to guide you through the process step-by-step.

The reason that building your own Max for Live device is essential to loading custom shaders is that using a generic device would result in a sub-par experience, with fixed and anonymous parameter ranges. Instead, building your own device allows you to use intuitive parameter units, names and representations.
