Basic settings with Videsync 2 + Windows10 (AL12)

I wanna ask you some basic settings and best practices:

Laptop with Win 10 (ssd/16ram/ core i7 9th gen)
Ableton Live 12
Videosync 2 (last update)

we basically wanna use AL for menage a complete live set for a live band (backing tracks + visuals)

we put some .wav files for BT and some .mov (1920x1080, h264 codec 1 keyframe/sec) without sound for Visuals, to project in a ledwall or 2nd monitor via hdmi. (no effects during the live playback, just play and stop)

3 main questions:

  1. the laptop has boh integrated graphic and external card. is better to use any of these two ?
  2. it seems that .mov files during playback have some glitches that the same file in .mp4 has not.

There is a realiable export setting/codec/keyframe/file type that helps videosync to working well?
3) what about videosync settings? recomended FPS ? if we play FHD (1920X1080) we have to change window setting ?

bonus: what about to manage latency of video compared to audio? is this effected by the framerate of the audio? or is only by the HDMI routing and cable lenght? i export all the videos synced with audio, but in a live stage you can have some trouble with latency.

Every answer could be helpful, so thanks in advance.

Anyone can help me? Thanks :+1:

Hi Alberto, welcome to the forum!

  1. Dedicated GPUs are generally much more powerful than integrated graphics. However, integrated graphics are usually sufficient for tasks like video playback or minimal real-time video manipulation.
  2. .mov and .mp4 are both “containers”, and don’t say anything about the video’s codec or quality. You can read more about codecs and containers on this page of our Handbook. There is not one specific codec that is preferred for use with Videosync. Considering you mention “glitches”, I assume the issue may be that you are playing these video clips on Audio Tracks in Arrangement View, and that the Tempo is automated. If this is true, then it’s a good thing to check if the video clips have Warp disabled, as this is known to cause playback glitches due to a limitation of Ableton’s API. You can find a list of known limitations for Videosync on this page in the manual. To work around this issue, simply enable Warp for any video clips on Audio Tracks in Arrangement View when you are also using Tempo Automation.
  3. If your original video resolution is 1920x1080 and you are not performing any real-time video manipulation (such as applying video effects), setting Videosync’s resolution to 1920x1080 is perfectly fine. For the frame rate (FPS), I recommend using 60.

Bonus question: When using video clips on Audio Tracks in Arrangement View, you can consider using the Properties device to set a Video Delay at the bottom of the device. This creates an offset exclusively for video clips (and not any realtime generated video).

Thanks for your help.

I just wanna say that I play my stuff in session view (1 audio track is for backing tracks, the 2nd is for videosync video playback, and btw vids aren’t exported with audio) , so I’m not using arrangement one, and of course I play video in the videosync playback window, not the Ableton one.

Warp is always off.

Thoughts about that? Thanks @Jean-Paul :+1:

Would it be possible for you to:

  • Send a video recording of the glitches you are describing?
  • Send over the Live Set (or part of it) with the videos in question?

You can send them to firstcontact@showsync.com. That way we can see if we can reproduce the glitches you are describing.
